Volcanic rock formed when magma erupted from the earth and cooled, often rapidly and gases escape during the process leaving a pitted surface.   Volcanic “lava” rock is black.    Pumice, also formed from magma flows, so also a volcanic rock, is usually a grey colour and can be dyed in various colours.
