Dumortierite is an attractive mid to dark blue colour and used in its massive form as an ornamental gemstone. A dense, fibrous stone is it touch and durable. Named after the French paleontologist, Eugene Dumortier, the stone can be easily confused with sodalite and lapis lazuli, although closer examination will show visible differences.
