Opal is  a hydrated amorphous form of silica.  There are many varieties of opal around the world.   Not all have a play of colour.   Australia has white, black and boulder opal – the precious grades show a play of colour.  Peru has pink and blue opal which are solid colours.  Mexico has fire opal which can have a play of colour over its yellow-orange-red toned body colour.
